Dive Into China & Chinese Christianity (2024 NOV.)
Come alongside ERRChina/CAC friends and scholars as you engage with works that reflect on past and present Chinese worldviews. You will gain a greater understanding of China and the church, past and present, and its meaning and impact in our current world situation. Together, we’ll make the most of a time of uncertainty, waiting, and strained isolation and spend it in patience, hope, and exploration.
Our book club facilitator, Joann Pittman is back from sabbatical. Thank you to author David Marshall for leading the discussion on JULY 31.
Our past discussions of True Son of Heaven, Shanghai Faithful and Beyond East and West were really enlightening and encouraged us to dive deeper into author’s writings. The Nov. 1 meeting on Lin Yutang’s The Importance of Living and From Pagan to Christian proved a deep dive into this public philosopher’s thoughts on Western and Chinese cultural influences and Christ’s uniqueness.

“When Joann discovered a 126-year-old American bell hanging in a church in southwest China she knew there was a story to tell. Who had decided to ship it? How had it been transported? How had it survived the political turmoil of the 1950’s and 1960’s? She also knew that if there was one bell there must be others. Over the course of eight months she travelled around China looking for old church bells, finding ones from the United France, Germany, Russia, and the United States. This book is a collection of stories about those bells. But more importantly, they are stories of God’s faithfulness to his church in China.”

Joann is the Vice-President for Partnerships and China Engagement at ChinaSource. Before joining ChinaSource she spent more than 20 years in China as a teacher, student, and intercultural trainer. She has taught courses in Chinese history, culture, and language at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (MN), Taylor University (IN), and Wheaton College (IL).
[Louise (occasional alternate facilitator), an ERRChina Alumni with extensive experience in China, is currently editing a follow-up companian to a book of ERRChina teacher stories, Saving Grandmother’s Face and Other Tales from Christian Teachers in China. She resides in Canada.]
